Each AfroVibes International event is powered by the DJs behind the decks. In this spotlight, we're featuring DJ Missy J, one of the talents bringing the global energy to the AfroVibes stage.
1. Tell us a bit about yourself.
I'm from Can Tho, which is part of the Mekong Delta, and I’ve been living in Saigon for the past 6 years. With a love for music and meeting new people, I had the chance to learn DJing and really dive into it. My music is influenced by the community around me—especially Hiphop, R&B, and mostly Afro sounds. I feel a strong connection to remixes that blend these styles together.
2. What genres do you love spinning the most, and how would you describe your sound or style as a DJ?
I mostly spin Afro, Amapiano, and different blends of those styles. As a DJ, I love creating a vibe where people recognize their favorite songs—but with a fresh twist and groove. My style is all about keeping the energy high, getting people to move, and surprising them with something new in the mix.
3. Every DJ has their process. How do you prepare for a set, especially for high-energy multicultural events like AfroVibes?
I usually imagine the vibe of the party—the energy, the crowd, and the atmosphere. Then I choose songs that match that feeling. I focus on creating a journey that connects different cultures while keeping the dancefloor alive.
4. What’s been one of your most memorable DJ experiences so far?
I’ve had so many amazing moments, but one that really stands out is a Halloween party where I played one of my best sets. The energy was incredible—everyone was dancing and vibing. I was in a black costume, and everything just clicked: the music, the mood, the crowd. Unforgettable!
5. What advice would you give to aspiring DJs trying to break into the international party scene?
You never know if you never try. Don’t doubt yourself. If you have passion—or even just interest—go for it. Putting yourself out there always brings opportunities. And if things don’t go as planned, don’t give up. It’s all about consistency and trusting the process. Keep learning, keep playing, and stay connected to the music and the people.
6. Who’s a DJ or music producer you consider a major inspiration and why?
Definitely Dope Caesar, Gilla, and Nie. Their music and the way they craft their sets and sounds is truly a masterpiece. They each have a unique energy that inspires me to grow and keep developing my own style.
7. Where can people follow your journey?
