AfroVibes International DJ Feature: Kaira Starr

Each AfroVibes International event is powered by the DJs behind the decks. In this spotlight, we're featuring Kaira Starr, one of the DJs bringing the global energy to AfroVibes International London at Soul Lounge!

  1. Who are you and where are you from? What should the AfroVibes International audience know about you and your journey as a DJ?

My name is Kaira Starr and im from South London. I’ve been building my name through Amapiano focused events and my journey has been all about staying authentic to the sound while also showing people that Amapiano can work in so many different spaces and crowds.

  2. What genres do you enjoy spinning the most, and how would you describe your overall sound or style behind the decks?

I enjoy playing Amapiano the most, especially soulful, deep and high energy sounds. I also love Afro House and Afrobeats.

  3. AfroVibes International brings together Afrobeats, Hip-Hop, Amapiano, and Dancehall from across the diaspora. How do you approach blending different global sounds in your DJ sets?

I love blending different sounds because music is universal. I always want my sets to feel exciting and fresh.

  4. What is your process for preparing for a live set, especially when performing for a diverse and international crowd?

Before a set I always think about the crowd, the venue and the vibe. I prepare playlists for different moods and energy levels so I can adapt in the moment. I like to include a mix of familiar songs and sounds they may not have heard before.

  5. What has been one of the most memorable moments of your DJ career so far?

One of my most memorable moments was playing a 4am set in Barcelona at One Way. The crowd energy was amazing and it reminded me how powerful Amapiano can be, even with people from different countries and backgrounds.

  6. How do you think DJs contribute to connecting cultures through music on a global stage?

DJs connect cultures because we introduce people to sounds they might not usually hear. Music can bring together people from completely different backgrounds in one room.

  7. What advice would you give to DJs who want to break into the international party or nightlife scene?

I would say stay consistent, build your own sound and don’t try to copy everyone else. Also networking is key!

  8. Where can people follow you and keep up with your work?

People can follow me on Instagram at @kaira.starr. I also share mixes and music content on YouTube and SoundCloud too!
