AfroVibes International DJ Feature: YaGurlMega

Each AfroVibes International event is powered by the DJs behind the decks. In this spotlight, we're featuring YaGurlMega, one of the talents bringing the global energy to the AfroVibes London stage.

  1. Who are you and where are you from? What should the AfroVibes International audience know about you and your journey as a DJ?

My name is Mega and I’m originally Japanese and Jamaican, but based in London. I started off doing bedroom mixes on TikTok in December 2021, which quickly gained traction, so I decided to start DJ’ing publicly in early 2022. Since then, I’ve had the opportunity to work with a range of respected brands, playing at clubs, brand events and festivals, as well as international bookings in places like Milan, Sweden and Japan.

  2. What genres do you enjoy spinning the most, and how would you describe your overall sound or style behind the decks?

My core genres are Amapiano, Afrobeats and Dancehall. These are the sounds I’m strongest in. My style is very energetic and jumpy, I like to bring party-starter vibes to my sets.

  3. AfroVibes International brings together Afrobeats, Hip-Hop, Amapiano, and Dancehall from across the diaspora. How do you approach blending different global sounds in your DJ sets?

I’m known for my “Amafusion” sets, where I blend different genres together. My aim is always to take the crowd on a journey and make everyone feel included. Fusion mixes work well because they bring different worlds together in a way that feels exciting and unexpected.

  4. What is your process for preparing for a live set, especially when performing for a diverse and international crowd?

When preparing a live set for an international crowd, it’s all about music selection. I like to include sounds from different parts of the world while making sure the set still flows.

  5. What has been one of the most memorable moments of your DJ career so far?

One of my most memorable moments was probably my debut on Culture FM, where I took part in a live DJ battle. It was definitely one of the most nerve-racking bookings I’ve had so far, but also one of the most memorable.

  6. How do you think DJs contribute to connecting cultures through music on a global stage?

DJs help connect cultures because music is a universal language. By mixing sounds from different parts of the world, DJs introduce people to genres and artists they might not normally hear.

  7. What advice would you give to DJs who want to break into the international party or nightlife scene?

My advice to anyone starting out would be to put yourself out there and capture as much content as possible. As cliché as it sounds, you really just have to go for it. I'm still working on taking more content!

  8. Where can people follow you and keep up with your work?

You can follow me at @yagurlmega across all social platforms including SoundCloud, TikTok, Instagram and YouTube.
