AfroVibes DJ Feature: DJ RAGI (50/50)

Each AfroVibes International event is powered by the DJs behind the decks. In this spotlight, we're featuring DJ RAGI, one of the talents bringing the global energy to the AfroVibes stage.

1. Tell us a bit about yourself.

My name is DJ RAGI, and I’m from Yamaguchi, Japan. I started my DJ career in 2021, and the following year, I co-founded an event called 50/50 in Tokuyama with DJ MSK. Currently, I also hold regular residencies at Maverick and High Times. I’ve been fortunate to be invited to perform at events in Tokyo, Kyoto, Osaka, Hiroshima, and Fukuoka, and although I’m still learning every day, connecting with people through music at parties across Japan continues to be my greatest motivation.

2. What genres do you love spinning the most, and how would you describe your sound or style as a DJ?

While my sets are rooted in US Hip-Hop, I enjoy mixing in Afro Beats, house, R&B, Latin, and more. Rather than sticking to one genre, I focus on creating an atmosphere where everyone in the room feels comfortable and can enjoy themselves. Music, to me, is a tool that connects people beyond borders and genres, so I like building my sets flexibly to match the mood and flow of the moment. I’m always seeking out new sounds and inspiration to keep my style fresh.

3. Every DJ has their process. How do you prepare for a set, especially for high-energy multicultural events like AfroVibes?

For each event, I consider the theme, the venue’s atmosphere, and the styles of the other DJs on the lineup when selecting tracks. I regularly collect songs that catch my attention or spark inspiration, gradually adding them to my playlists. Before a show, I imagine the flow of the night while keeping the sound system and audience in mind—but during the actual performance, I often adapt on the spot to match the crowd’s energy and reactions.

4. What’s been one of your most memorable DJ experiences so far?

I’ll never forget the first time I was invited to perform outside my home prefecture. Playing in a completely new city, for people I had never met before, and seeing them respond so positively to my set truly gave me chills. Likewise, at 50/50, there have been unforgettable moments when I could feel a deep sense of unity with my local friends and audience. In both situations, the common thread is the joy of connecting through music.

5. What advice would you give to aspiring DJs trying to break into the international party scene?

Listen to as much music as possible, and find tracks that genuinely excite you. At the start, things might not go perfectly—but every experience, whether good or bad, becomes part of your growth. Don’t focus too much on perfection; focus on enjoying the moment. I’m still learning myself, so I’d be happy to grow alongside other DJs who share the same passion.

6. Who’s a DJ or music producer you consider a major inspiration and why?

One of my biggest influences is Mustard. I truly admire his ability to create beats that are simple yet addictive, and the way he can instantly transform the vibe of a track into something club-ready. His approach—stripping music down to only the most essential elements to bring out the groove—has had a major influence on my own DJ style.
