Each AfroVibes International event is powered by the DJs behind the decks. In this spotlight, we're featuring Mami Wanted, one of the talents bringing the global energy to the AfroVibes stage.
1. Tell us a bit about yourself.
I'm Mami Wanted - a Congolese DJ born in France, currently based in Australia. My journey started unexpectedly after I joined a national DJ competition in Sydney (YourShot) just for fun... and instantly fell in love with the power of mixing music and creating energy through sound. It lit something in me.
Even though l've only been DJing for 7 months, things moved fast. People now call me "the coolest baby DJ" — not because of my skills ,but because of how quickly I've stepped into the game with boldness and love for the craft.
I've lived in multiple countries and carry that global spirit into every set. Whether I'm playing in Europe, Australia, or Asia, my goal is always the same: to make people feel something real through music.
AfroVibes should know this: I'm not just playing music — I'm creating moments. I don't chase trends; I bring vibes you didn't know you needed.
2. What genres do you love spinning the most, and how would you describe your sound or style as a DJ?
I'm in love with Afro sounds — from Afrobeat to Amapiano, Afrohouse from Angola to R&B- but I mix them with unexpected layers: Jersey Club, Baile Funk and Dancehall. My style is bold, emotional, high-energy, and unapologetically global.
My sets speak many languages but always come from the same pulse — the diaspora heartbeat. I play for people who love movement, sweat, and surprise.
AfroVibes crowds are perfect for that because they get fusion. They want to feel home and far at the same time.
3. Every DJ has their process. How do you prepare for a set, especially for high-energy multicultural events like AfroVibes?
It starts with research not just tracks, but the city, the crowd, the vibe of the event. Then I build energy curves not fixed playlists, but emotional waves. I prep transitions that can flip the room and moments that let people catch their breath.
I also leave space for instinct. At multicultural events like AfroVibes, reading the crowd is everything. If I see heads turning, I lean in. My sets are structured chaos planned enough to be sharp, free enough to be dangerous.
4. What’s been one of your most memorable DJ experiences so far?
One of my most memorable moments was being added last minute to the lineup for a show headlined by South African DJ-producer Nandipha808. At the time, I only had four months of experience, so playing right before an international artist like that was a major opportunity.
All the DJs before me played Amapiano, which made sense given the crowd the energy was already high.
I found myself at a crossroads: should I follow the hype and keep the same vibe, or shift the mood and introduce something different?
Once I got behind the decks, I trusted my instincts and went with a more Afrobeats-driven set. It was a risk but the crowd didn't leave the dancefloor for a second. After my set, so many people came up to thank me, saying how refreshing and energetic it felt.
5. What advice would you give to aspiring DJs trying to break into the international party scene?
Build your sound before your brand.
Aesthetics fade, but impact stays. Study how to read a room, learn to mix across genres without losing your identity, and don't just follow the hype understand it !
Also: travel.
Even if it's local. Culture is your strongest tool as an international DJ. And lastly protect your energy. Not every gig is worth your spirit.
6. Who’s a DJ or music producer you consider a major inspiration and why?
Dopecaesar is a huge inspiration for me. The way she studies music, builds narratives, and crafts transitions is on another level. It's not just about mixing tracks she creates emotional journeys. Every blend she does feels intentional, refined, and deeply felt.
Her authenticity shows in how she respects the music, the roots, and the audience. That's the level I aim for not just playing good sets, but creating timeless moments.
Watching her work reminds me that being a Dj is an art form, and the more you master your craft, the more powerful your message becomes.
